Travel changes as we move into a new season of life. For many busy professionals, empty nesters, and retirees, it’s no longer about squeezing as much as possible into a week away. It’s about slowing down, traveling more intentionally, and creating experiences that feel meaningful long after you return home.
There is a question I find myself asking clients more often than ever before.
“What do you want this trip to feel like?”
Twenty years ago, the answer probably would have sounded very different. Most vacations were built around limited vacation days, school calendars, soccer schedules, and trying to fit as much as possible into a single week. We hurried from one place to the next because time was precious, and there was always the feeling that we needed to make the most of every minute.
Then life changed.
The children grew up. Careers became more flexible, or retirement came into view. Suddenly, there was room to stay a little longer, wander a little farther, and experience a destination instead of simply checking it off a list.
That, to me, is one of the greatest gifts of this season of life.
Why Travel Changes in Midlife and Retirement
One of the things I’ve noticed, both personally and professionally, is that our priorities naturally evolve.
When Shawn and I traveled through Italy, I expected to come home talking about the Vatican, Pompeii, and the breathtaking coastline of Positano. Those places absolutely lived up to every expectation, but they aren’t the first memories that come to mind today.
I remember lingering in a piazza after dinner while the streets slowly emptied around us. I remember conversations with other couples on our tour that began over a glass of wine and somehow lasted for hours. I remember realizing that we weren’t rushing to the next thing because we didn’t have to.
Years earlier, we probably would have tried to squeeze one more sightseeing stop into the day.
Instead, we simply enjoyed being exactly where we were.
That trip reminded me that the best parts of travel aren’t always the ones you plan.
The World Is Bigger Than Most People Realize
Many people begin planning with a destination already in mind.
They know they want to visit Europe, Alaska, Africa, or Japan. What surprises them is discovering how many different ways there are to experience those places.
Someone may tell me they’ve always dreamed of European travel but can’t imagine packing and unpacking every few days. That’s often when I introduce them to river cruises, where you unpack once and wake each morning in another beautiful town.
Others tell me cruising has never appealed to them because they’re picturing enormous ships with thousands of passengers. Once they learn about smaller luxury cruises, the conversation changes completely.
Some travelers discover private journeys that move at their own pace. Others fall in love with luxury train travel, culinary itineraries, or safaris followed by a few peaceful days along the coast.
The destination may stay the same, but the experience can feel entirely different.
That’s why I believe every trip should begin with a conversation, not an itinerary.
Planning Should Feel Exciting, Not Exhausting
The internet has given us more travel information than ever before, but it hasn’t necessarily made planning easier.
Within minutes, you can compare hundreds of hotels, read thousands of reviews, and watch countless videos. Before long, it’s difficult to know which opinions actually apply to the kind of trip you want.
I’ve had many clients tell me they spent weeks researching before finally deciding they needed someone to help them sort through the noise.
That’s where I come in.
As a luxury travel advisor, my job isn’t simply to make reservations. It’s to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, narrow the choices, and recommend experiences that truly fit your interests, travel style, and goals.
That’s what personalized travel planning means to me.
It’s never about booking the most expensive hotel or suggesting a destination because it’s popular. It’s about creating a thoughtfully planned journey that reflects who you are, what you enjoy, and how you want to spend your time.
The Moments That Stay With Us
Not long ago, Shawn and I took a cruise with several of our college friends.
Of course we enjoyed the beautiful ports, but that’s not what I remember most.
I remember laughing until late in the evening over dinners that seemed to last forever. I remember watching the sunset from the deck while everyone shared stories from different seasons of life. I remember thinking how rare it is to have uninterrupted time with people who have known you for decades.
That trip reminded me of something I see over and over again with my clients.
The destinations inspire us to travel.
The people we meet, the conversations we have, and the moments we never expected are usually what stay with us.

Your Next Chapter Starts With a Conversation
I truly believe some of our best adventures come later in life.
Not because we’ve waited longer to take them, but because we’ve learned what matters. We no longer feel the need to see everything. We value time together, meaningful experiences, and the freedom to enjoy each day without feeling rushed.
If you’ve started dreaming differently about travel, you’re not alone.
At Hartwell Travel Co., I help busy professionals, empty nesters, and retirees plan personalized luxury vacations that reflect this season of life. Whether you’re considering a European river cruise, a luxury ocean cruise, a custom itinerary through Italy, an African safari, or a celebration trip with family and friends, every recommendation begins the same way.
With a conversation.
If you’re ready to start thinking about your next chapter of travel, I’d love to invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation. Together, we’ll talk about where you’ve been, where you’d like to go, and the experiences that will matter most when you return home.
Because the most meaningful journeys aren’t measured by how many places you visit.
They’re measured by how deeply you experience them.
Frequently Asked Questions About Planning Your Next Chapter of Travel
What is the best type of vacation for empty nesters and retirees?
There isn’t one perfect answer because every traveler is different. Many of my clients enjoy European river cruises, luxury ocean cruises, food and wine journeys, safaris, small-group tours, and customized itineraries that allow them to travel at a comfortable pace.
When should I start planning a luxury vacation?
The earlier, the better. Many luxury hotels, river cruises, expedition cruises, and small-group experiences have limited availability and often book many months in advance. Planning early gives you more choices and allows time to personalize every detail.
Why should I work with a luxury travel advisor?
A luxury travel advisor helps you navigate the overwhelming number of travel options, recommends experiences based on your interests, and creates an itinerary that reflects your travel style instead of following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Can a trip be completely customized?
Absolutely. Some travelers prefer private touring, while others enjoy a blend of guided experiences and independent time. Every itinerary should reflect your interests, pace, and priorities rather than following someone else’s idea of the perfect vacation.
What destinations are popular for travelers in this stage of life?
Europe continues to be a favorite, especially Italy, France, and the British Isles. River cruises, Alaska, African safaris, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, luxury train journeys, and food and wine destinations are also wonderful choices for travelers who have more flexibility and want meaningful experiences.
